Isager

The Danish company Isager has been delighting knitters worldwide since 1977 with their high-quality yarns made from natural fibers and their beloved patterns. You can find their yarns and patterns in select shops across Denmark and internationally. Marianne Isager, the founder, and her daughter Helga Isager, co-owner, are also the creative minds behind a series of popular knitting books.

Isager’s story begins with designer Åse Lund Jensen (1920-1977), who opened her studio in 1960. Åse was deeply rooted in the Danish craft tradition, drawing much of her inspiration from Icelandic and Faroese knitting cultures. Collaborating with Henrichsen’s Yarn Mill, she developed a range of high-quality woolen yarns, including her favorites, Spinni and Jensen Yarn, which remain part of Isager’s collection today.

Åse Lund Jensen was a trailblazer in her field, tirelessly promoting knitting as a recognized craft through numerous exhibitions and her teaching at Skals Håndarbejdsskole, now Skals – Højskolen for Design og Håndarbejde (Skals – School of Design and Crafts). It was here that she met Marianne Isager, sparking a friendship that eventually led Marianne to take over the rights to Åse’s timeless patterns and continue the legacy of what we now know as Isager.

Today, Isager is based in the picturesque village of Tversted in northern Jutland, near the North Sea. The company operates out of a charming old elementary school building, where they have their retail shop, wholesale operations, and workshop centre. I was privileged to visit them in Tversted in May 2024 and totally fall in love with everything they do.
